Introduction to Digital Devices
Think about this
How could one device help you write, draw and listen to music?
Imagine your headteacher wants to do three tasks this morning:
- Type and print a letter to parents.
- Calculate the total attendance for all classes.
- Play the national anthem during the school assembly.
Could one single tool help with all three tasks?
Yes! A desktop computer, a laptop, or a tablet can perform all of these tasks because it is a digital device.
What is a digital device?
Digital devices use electronic circuits to work with information represented by numbers. A laptop, tablet and digital camera are examples.
Electricity Alone Does Not Make a Machine Digital
It is important to remember that using electricity does not automatically make a machine digital:
- A basic ceiling fan without digital controls uses electricity to spin its blades and move air. It has an electric motor, but it does not store files, compute numbers, or follow programmed instructions.
- A traditional electric iron uses electrical power solely to heat up a metal plate for pressing clothes.
- In contrast, a digital device contains microchips and electronic circuits that process data according to instructions.
Common Digital Devices in Our Community
| Device | Where You See It | What It Helps People Do |
|---|---|---|
| Smartphone | In the hands of teachers and traders | Make phone calls, send messages, check weather forecasts, and transfer payments. |
| Laptop Computer | In offices and school computer labs | Write lesson notes, create budgets, browse educational websites, and watch videos. |
| Point of Sale (POS) Terminal | At local retail kiosks and bank agents | Read payment cards, print receipts, and confirm transactions electronically. |
| Digital Blood Pressure Monitor | At primary health centers | Measure heart pulse and blood pressure with an electronic sensor. |
Meet a desktop computer
When you step into a computer lab or a library, you often see a desktop computer. Let us meet its primary parts:
The CPU is a processor inside the system unit.
- The Monitor: The screen that displays pictures, text, and videos so your eyes can see what the computer is doing.
- The Keyboard: A panel containing letter keys, number keys, and symbol keys used to type words and numbers into the computer.
- The Mouse: A handheld pointing tool that moves an arrow (the cursor) across the screen to click, select, and open programs.
- The System Unit: The rectangular box (made of metal and sturdy plastic) that houses the computer's delicate internal components.
Important Distinction: System Unit vs. CPU
Many people mistakenly point at the whole metal box and call it the "CPU".
- The System Unit is the entire outer box/casing that protects internal hardware.
- The CPU (Central Processing Unit) is a small microchip fixed inside the box onto the main circuit board (motherboard). The CPU is the computer's "brain" that calculates numbers and executes instructions.
Caring for Digital Devices
Digital devices have delicate glass screens and sensitive microchips. To keep them running for many years, remember these four rules:
- Keep Liquids Far Away: Never place tea, juice, water bottles, or soup near a computer keyboard or tablet. A single spill can cause an electrical short circuit.
- Use Clean, Dry Hands: Always use clean, dry hands and keep liquids away when touching devices so moisture and sticky dirt do not enter keys or ports.
- Avoid Extreme Heat and Direct Sun: Do not leave tablets or phones on hot car seats or in direct afternoon sunlight.
- Use Sturdy Surfaces: Always place laptops on a flat, stable table where they cannot easily slip off or overheat.

Grab your notebook and a pencil.
- Walk around your classroom or home with your teacher or guardian's guidance.
- Spot three different tools or machines around you.
- For each tool, record these four details in your notebook:
- Tool Name
- Does it use electricity or batteries? (Yes / No)
- Is it a Digital Device or a Non-Digital Tool?
- What problem does it solve?
Model Response Example
- Tool 1: Basic Ceiling Fan (without digital controls) → Runs on electricity to turn motor blades, but does not process data or run programs. Non-digital electrical appliance.
- Tool 2: Teacher's Tablet → Uses a rechargeable battery, has a touchscreen, runs learning applications, and stores eBooks. Digital device.
- Tool 3: Wooden Ruler → Helps draw straight lines; needs no electricity or batteries. Non-digital tool.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
| Mistake | Correction |
|---|---|
| Calling the entire computer box the "CPU" | The box is the System Unit. The CPU is a small chip mounted inside on the motherboard. |
| Believing all electric machines are digital | An electric clothing iron or a simple incandescent bulb uses electricity, but does not process digital signals. |
| Cleaning a computer screen with wet soap and water | Clean screens gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth only. Never spray liquid directly onto the monitor. |
Your Notebook Summary
Copy these three sentences into your class exercise book and fill in the missing words:
