Computer Software Overview: Taxonomy and Classification
Welcome to JSS 2 Computer Studies! In JSS 1, we explored how computer hardware evolved from ancient mechanical tools to powerful microprocessors, and we dissected the internal engine of the CPU.
However, physical silicon and copper circuits are completely helpless without Software—the structured sets of instructions that tell the machine what to do, when to do it, and how to do it.
In this lesson, we will establish a rigorous Software Taxonomy (classification tree), dissect the roles of System Software versus Application Software, and see how software bridges the gap between human thoughts and electronic pulses.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
- Distinguish fundamentally between System Software and Application Software.
- Classify System Software into its four branches: Operating Systems, Device Drivers, Utility Programs, and Translators.
- Classify Application Software into General-Purpose and Bespoke (Custom) packages.
- Draw and explain the layered architecture of a computing system.
Key Vocabulary
| Term | Technical Role |
|---|---|
| Software | Intangible collections of computer programs, procedures, and data that command hardware behavior. |
| System Software | Low-level software that manages computer hardware, memory, and peripherals. |
| Application Software | Programs designed to help end-users perform specific tasks (word processing, drawing, accounting). |
| Utility Program | Housekeeping and maintenance software that analyzes, configures, and optimizes system health. |
| Device Driver | A software translator allowing the operating system to control a specific hardware peripheral. |

Study Notes: System Software vs. Application Software
1. System Software: The Operating Platform
System software serves as the invisible intermediary between computer hardware and user applications. It has four key members:
1. The Operating System (OS): The master control program (e.g., Windows 11, Linux Ubuntu, Android). It manages CPU scheduling, memory allocation, and file storage.
2. Device Drivers: Without a driver, Windows cannot talk to an HP or Epson printer! The driver translates standardized operating system printing requests into the specific electronic pin-signals the printer hardware understands.
3. Utility Programs: Specialized tools for system maintenance and health:
- Antivirus software: Scans for malicious virus signatures.
- Disk Cleanup: Clears temporary junk files to recover storage space.
- File Archivers (Zip): Compresses large documents for fast transmission.
4. Language Translators: Compilers and interpreters that convert human-readable programming code (Python, C++) into raw binary machine code (0s and 1s).
2. Application Software: The User's Productivity Tools
Application software helps human users solve real-world problems: - General-Purpose (Packaged / Off-the-Shelf): Mass-produced software sold in stores or downloaded online for everyone: - Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, VLC Media Player, Google Chrome. - Bespoke (Custom-Tailored / Tailor-Made): Commissioned and written by software engineers specifically for one single organization: - The customized core banking software used by the Central Bank of Nigeria. - An electronic patient records portal created exclusively for a hospital in Ibadan.
The Layered Computing Architecture
Notice how each layer communicates only through the layer beneath it:
[ HUMAN USER ] <-- Clicks buttons and inputs data
|
v
[ APPLICATION SOFTWARE ] <-- Word Processors, Web Browsers, Spreadsheets
|
v
[ SYSTEM SOFTWARE (O.S.)] <-- Coordinates memory, tasks, and file systems
|
v
[ PHYSICAL HARDWARE ] <-- CPU, RAM, Disk Storage, Display Screen
Worked Example: The Hospital Check-in Journey
Trace the software layers when a patient visits an eye clinic:
- User (Receptionist): Types the patient's national identity number on a keyboard.
- Application Software (Clinic Portal): A bespoke web-based patient registry validates the ID and displays medical history.
- System Software (Operating System): Windows 11 allocates RAM memory for the database program, routes network packets across the clinic LAN, and manages the monitor screen display.
- Hardware (Physical Server & Terminal): The CPU fetches and executes the instructions, writing the record safely onto a solid-state disk.
Practical Class Activity: The Software Taxonomy Classification
Classify each of the following eight software packages into System Software or Application Software, and identify their specific branch:
Linux Ubuntu→ System Software (Operating System)Microsoft Excel→ Application Software (General-Purpose Spreadsheet)HP DeskJet Print Driver→ System Software (Device Driver)Kaspersky Antivirus→ System Software (Utility Program)VLC Media Player→ Application Software (Media Application)Python 3 Interpreter→ System Software (Language Translator)FirstBank Mobile App→ Application Software (Bespoke Banking App)WinRAR File Compressor→ System Software (Utility Program)
Common Mistakes & Corrections
| Common Mistake | Why It Is Incorrect | Proper Correction |
|---|---|---|
| "An operating system is just a fancy application program." | Applications cannot run without an operating system to manage memory and hardware. | The OS is foundational system software; applications run on top of it. |
| "Bespoke software is cheaper than off-the-shelf software." | Hiring software engineers to build custom systems costs far more than buying mass-market software. | Off-the-shelf software is cheaper because development costs are shared across millions of buyers. |
Notebook Summary
Copy Into Your Computing Notebook
- System Software: Controls internal hardware operations (Operating Systems, Device Drivers, Utilities, Translators).
- Application Software: Solves human user tasks (General-Purpose off-the-shelf vs. Bespoke custom-built).
- The Operating System is the critical platform that sits between physical hardware and application programs.
- Layered computing: User → Application → System OS → Hardware.
